Bill Murray, a Hollywood celebrity, had US$174,000 snatched from his cryptocurrency wallet within a day of obtaining the funds through a fundraising event. However, the robbers were prevented from clearing his entire account.
The sale, arranged by The Shack in collaboration with Coinbase’s NFT universe, featured a collectible from entertainer Bill Murray’s “Bill Murray 1000” selection, which aims to provide enthusiasts with a distributed ledgers experience by having a meal with the movie star.
As per findings over the last two days, the attackers began ‘draining’ the Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation actor’s profiles.
Well before the alert system was sounded, the thieves stole 110 out of 119.2 ETH virtual currency generated at the bidding, worth approximately US$174,000.
According to the findings, there were also attempts to eliminate NFTs from the entertainer’s private library in the pocket. However, these were stymied by safety initiatives.

According to a spokesperson for the artist’s internet security advisor Project Venkman, the NFTS includes pieces influenced by his daily existence, as well as Flower Girls, Cool Cat, Pudgy, Penguin, CryptoPunks, and Damien Hirst, which are now relocated to a different account.
As per Venkman, the theft ETH were delivered to a location linked to the cryptocurrency trading Uniochain and Binance, and the second in line in that bidding, for Murray’s Chive donation consequently agreed to donate 120 ETH (approximately $187,500) to substitute what was stolen.

The funds raised from this NFT bidding were intended to go to a non-profit named Chive Charities to help fund the treatment of a three-year-old girl with insolvable epilepsy due to an uncommon CLDN5 genetic mutation. The attackers eventually drained almost all of the resources from the account.
It remains unknown how the hackers got entry to Murray’s pocket, and the offenders of the burglary remain unknown. Following the invasion, the entertainer’s team disclosed that they had submitted a police report. They are now also collaborating with cryptocurrency consulting firm Chainalysis which will further examine the hack and pinpoint the perpetrators.
